El Tular is a private nature reserve nestled in pine-oak forests just outside Guatemala City. It offers a mosaic of biodiversity-rich habitats interlaced with hiking trails, along with visitor amenities including a restaurant, eco-friendly bungalows, a camping site, and an organic garden. The reserve’s upper, more humid zones harbor the highest diversity—particularly of orchids and epiphytes.

🔬 Projects & Research

In 2024, a Conservation Grant from the American Orchid Society supported an in-depth profile of El Tular as a sanctuary for native orchids.

The reserve has also hosted university students conducting undergraduate and graduate research in botany, ecology, and conservation.

• Preventing hunting and poaching
• Maintaining fencing in a humid climate
• Controlling invasive species such as Ensete ventricosum (photo)
